Membrane Switches

Membrane switches are fast replacing mechanical switches in electronic applications where low-cost, visually appealing, and durable input pads are required.  Membrane switches are completely sealed making them dust-proof and humidity proof with extended temperature ranges (-45°C ~ +100°C). The typical membrane switch is comprised of several layers:

  • Membrane Switch CompositionPresentation Layer (Graphic Overlay)
AGE Nameplate combines both digital and screen print processes to produce brilliant graphic overlays utilizing simple or complex designs provided by the OEM. Custom embossed domes are used to highlight buttons to functions.

  • Adhesive Layer
Before bonding the critical circuit layer to the graphic overlay, AGE Nameplate uses laser guided registration tools to achieve alignment tolerances of ± .005” (±5 mils). Then we use best-in-class materials to ensure a lasting bond between the graphic overlay and the circuit layer of the membrane switch.

  • Circuit Layer
The printed circuit layer is created by applying high-quality conductive inks using a silk screen printing process. A standard multi-pin interface is used to connect the membrane switch to the OEM application processor or main buss. Separation layerA layer made of non-conductive materials is used to separate multiple circuit layers, preventing short-circuits. Circuit layerMultiple circuit layers are created to meet the complexity of the OEM design requirement. Adhesive layerSpecial adhesives are used to bond the membrane switch to the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or case material of the OEM’s application.
